Review: The clock has been literally perfect for my needs: as others have said, the chimes are so close to what you get from a mechanical movement as to be (to my and visitors' ears) indistinguishable from the real thing. The wood and brass-looking finish and the two 'keyholes' add to the authenticity: you would have to look very closely/take the clock off the wall to discover that it is battery-operated. Around March 2021 (about 18 months after purchase), the chime - really only the single hour strikes, rather than the carillon (Westminster, for me) - started to sound distorted - as you would get from, say, excessive volume through a rubbish speaker. Replacing the battery (which - another excellent point - has lasted for 18 months) made no difference and the distortion increased to the point where it was so intrusive, even when the voilume was low, that I had to turn off the chime - which was one of its main qualities. After a bit more reflection, I tried replacing the battery again. The result was a return to normal - the chimes and carillon sound as deep and convincing as they did previously. There is only one explanation I can think of: I was daft enough to have inserted an already flat battery; the one inserted a few minutes ago was new and in its pack, so there is no doubt. I regret my balanced (on the basis of what I thought ths ituation then was), but critical review, even though it was up for a day only. I am happy to reommend this clock for its quality, understated elegance and authenticity in reproducing an antique, mechanical timepiece. (Just be a bit brighter than me and make sure you replace the battery, when needed, with a new one!)

Review: Bought as gift for a daughter who remembers growing up to the sounds of the many chiming mechanical clocks we had in the house. Three quick comments: 1. Whilst you don't expect the musical resonance of a 7 foot Grandfather clock, the sound from this tiny speaker is astonishingly good. 2. I am uncertain why someone said the clock doesn't sound on the quarters - it definitely does. 3. Seiko is a brand I would always recommend when making any clock or watch purchases. Over the years I have found them to be one of the most reliable of the middle priced brands. So why only 4 Stars. Its excellent. But Amazon says give it 5 stars if I love it. I love my wife, children and grand children. They are sentient beings. Love is not applicable to my relationship with a mass produced object of metal, plastic and glass.
