Description: Seiko Prospex Limited Edition Automatic Men's Watch SLA037 J1 55 years ago, Seiko introduced its, and Japan's, first ever diver's watch. With an automatic movement and water resistance to 150m, it proved its reliability when it was used by members of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition from 1966 to 1969. In the years that followed, Seiko created many other diver's watches that found favour with professional divers and adventurers alike, thanks to their high quality and reliability. Three of the most important landmarks from Seiko's first decade as a maker of diver's watches are now re-created in celebration of the 55th anniversary of that first achievement. They are offered in the Prospex collection which is today synonymous with excellence in watches for use in all types of sports and challenging environments. This is the 1965 Diver's Re- Creation SLA037 J1 limited to 1,100 pieces. The Case: Whilst they remain faithful to their original designs the watch is fully up to date in terms of specification and execution. The greatest advance is in the grade of stainless steel used in the construction of the case. The grade of steel is known as Seiko's Ever- Brilliant Steel, thanks to the brilliant white hue that gives this watch its unique look. This grade of steel is more corrosion resistant than that which is used in most high-end watches today. In fact, this stainless steel has a PREN value 1.7 times higher than that of the grade of steel used in most high-end watches. PREN ( Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) is a widely accepted standard used to measure corrosion resistance. It is used for the first time in the watch industry on these trilogy of limited pieces whose case is, like the original, in titanium. This kind of material is used extensively in marine structures and vessels to avoid corrosion in a chloride-rich environment such as sea water. It presents many challenges in the manufacture of watch cases but, thanks to the experience and innovative techniques of the Seiko team, these challenges were overcome and Ever- Brilliant Steel is now set to bring a new level of durability to the diver's watch. The case is virtually identical to the original, but its diameter has been increased by 1.9mm. It has a box-shaped sapphire crystal glass over the top of the dial enhanced by the super-hard coating which protects the watch from scratches. The case back bears the same dolphin emblem as the 1965 original. The Dial: This 2020 edition of the 62 MAS takes some liberties by updating the colours. The SLA037 J1 has a blue-grey dial, which suits the concept well and adds modernity and originality. The dial is lightly brushed, offering reflections and playing with the ambient light. The hands and indexes remain identical to the original in terms of their shape and execution. The large applied markers are carefully shaped into rounded-rectangles with a polished surface which contrasts well with the blue background. The markers are filled with Seiko's own Lumi Brite, allowing for easy visibility at the depths of the ocean. To match the markers the date has a metallic frame and its presence is justified here. The hands are faithful to the original, with the same shape, although more sophisticated. The hands have multiple facets with large bevels on the sides and a mirror-polished top surface. Not only is this solution very pleasant to the eye, but it also facilitates time reading as the hands stand out. Inscriptions on the dial pay tribute to the original, with the | Diashock | mentioned at 6 o | clock. But here, you | ll notice two things: | HI- BEAT | and | 37 Jewels and that is a pretty clear indication that inside the case there isn | t a standard movement. The Strap: The SLA037 J1 also comes with a fresh blue strap. Seiko has opted for a soft and elegant approach whilst remaining being made from the same material as the original. It features a new matte finish and tropic pattern which suits the 1960's style. It features a steel pin buckle and a brushed and bevelled steel holder, engraved with Seiko. The strap feels comfortable straight out of the box. The Functions: Both the 1965 and the 1968 model are powered by the high beat 8 L55 movement. It was developed and assembled expressly for diver's watches at the Shizukuishi Watch Studio. This studio is based in Morioka in the north of Japan where all Seiko's skilled craftsmen and women are based. The 8 L55 is made up from 37 jewels which all work separately to power the watch, way above the standard. The timepiece can be wound through movement as well as manually turning the crown to suit both the old and new generation. At a power reserve of 55 hours, the 8 L55 allows you to rest your timepiece over the weekend. Additionally, the movement provides an immense accuracy of +15 to -10 seconds per day. This watch has a water resistance of 200 metres, making it suitable for diving. If you have any questions please click here Click here to join our facebook and Instagram !
